Why are Microscope Slides made of Glass?

Why are Microscope Slides made of Glass?

We all know that a microscope slide helps us solve so many cases and in millions of things to research. In fact, it is one of the most useful inventions in the world. It is defined as a thin flat piece of glass which is not too thick. It helps in holding the objects on itself for examining the test object through the microscope.

These microscopes slides help the students and the researchers study about the cell structure of the plants and the animals alike. Also, these crystalline structures are studied too.

First, an object or the test subject is mounted on the slide. Then, its inserted in the microscope for further observation.

Using one such instrument, we can actually learn more about content in one drop of a pond water or more about rocks and minerals.

Why are the slides used?

They are used because they do not get contaminated. Also, they are very easy to handle.  These are used to mount the test subject, place it or put it in a way that is very easier to handle.

So, it is quite easy to protect them from any kind of damage.

But why are these microscopes slides always made of glass?

So whatever slides we have used till now are normally made of glass. The edges of the slides however are neatly polished so that they do not hurt anyone. Also, they are made of some nice optical glass quality. Mostly these are made of soda lime glass or borosilicate glass. Sometimes a mix of plastics are also used.

With fused quartz into the fluorescence microscopy, the scene is really changed. But the reason why they are made of glass because it is easier to manipulate or make changes.  That’s why it is better to always make sure the slides are in good condition. Also, sometimes these have some depressions where they can hold some liquid for wet mounting.

Thus, these microscopic slides are quite important in the research.
