You might be wondering why we have told an oscilloscope to be one of the main parts of electrical and electronic engineering. It is an electronic test lab instrument that displays the complete value of an electric signal on the axis Y and with time along the X-axis. These instruments are commonly used to measure the shape of a waveform, which is a graph of voltage over time. And then, you have amplitude and frequency measurement of a signal. It can also help in detecting the glitches and noise of a signal.
Here you have different types of oscilloscopes. You have DSO or Digital Storage Oscilloscopes, where you read a voltage on an input channel, which amplified the signal, then the condition of the signal is identified and then it converts the signal. You have CRT and analog amplifies simply to display the signal on the screen.
Now there is a new generation of scopes that are known as MSO or Mixed Signal Oscilloscopes. It allows a certain number of analog input signals as well as some number of digital input signals. This analog signal can have a range of values and we are interested in understanding what is the actual amplitude of the signal is.
