They are used for testing a wide variety of materials such as grease, petroleum, bitumen, tar, asphalt, rubber, cement and soils.
In this test, the chosen force is applied over a given area and then for a known period and then the depth of the penetration or the depression made will be measured. It is measured in the tenths of a millimeter which is then expressed as a penetration number. The accurately fabricated steel base was designed to facilitate the so-called penetration tests to be made over the wide surface area of the sample. The adjustable feet are provided in the base for the leveling too.
The display of the penetration arm is the adjustable one to permit the testing of the samples which are actually in the thermostat bath.
The mentioned testing of the samples are very important in bitument testing and thus this apparatus plays an important role. The whole unit is a compact with the inbuilt timer to control the duration of the penetration which is present in the factory. It is generally preset for five seconds. This instrument is also provided with the leveling screws. And each penetrometer is then supplied with a plunger weighing 47. 5g for testing the bituminous product. The one 50g weight and the other one is 100g weight. It also has a cone and penetration unit.
